Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

7/9/2025 1:38 PM I am trying to determine if this record speaks of Yechiel (Chil) Rotbaum, son of Dawid Berek Rotbaum and Chana Jakubowicz. I beleive this should be a birth record for Chil's child with Etka Oldak. All names, dates, and towns listed would help me piece this puzzle together. Thank you. View the post with its 1 response
111360 Translation - German

7/9/2025 1:37 PM Hi there.

Please ignore the form on the right-hand side of the image. I'm only interested in deciphering the letter on the left in which
I can only make out some of the handwriting.

I am fluent in English and German, so a transcription in German or English translation would be most helpful for my research!

Does the letter begin "Dear Bernard & Malcia, I never received an answer to my last letter. Why? Maybe you're angry about what I wrote in my last letter." ?]

Thank you!

7/9/2025 1:37 PM from JRI there is an entry for Sora Liba Surazski, 1835, age 25, 26 March, father wolf surazski, father father Lejb. widow.
I am wondering if this is correct. Has JRI got the father and grandfather mixed up?
I am guessing I have the correct screen shot.

7/6/2025 9:09 PM Hi from Paris,
Can you please translate this death certificate of Icek SZLECHTMAN registered in Lodz under no. 464 of 1914?
It's important for me to know the names of his parents in order to trace his lineage.
Thank you in advance.
