Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

100004 Translation - Hebrew

9/18/2022 5:00 PM I am requesting a simple translation on this day of a sentence which I put through Google Translate and got mediocre results. This is from a mini-bio of a rabbi named Mordechai Katz and is referring to his son Yosef, who in his writings refers to a R' Moshe Yaffe as a relative of some sort, and then author of this mini-bio is explaining why Yosef would have been referring to R' Yaffe as that relative. I very much appreciate your guidance. Please ignore the numbers in parentheses. View the post with its 2 responses

100016 Translation - Tombstone

9/21/2022 12:28 PM This is the tombstone of my husband’s great grandmother’s brother. He is buried in Har Nebo Cemetery in Philadelphia. I seek a translation of the Hebrew text on the stone. This man’s mother & father are supposed to be buried in Har Nebo, but they can’t seem to be found there. This man & his family of origin are from Poltava, Russia/Poland. I am hoping for more family clues & info possibly from the Hebrew text. This photo is a screen shot of a photo taken for me and placed on Find-a-Grave. This is the tombstone of Dr Morris H Barrin. 100018 Interpretation

9/21/2022 12:28 PM Hi, According to historian Sholom Simonsohn R' Meir Katzenellenbogen (Maharam of Padua) was related to R' Zalman Rapa HaCohen, but Professor Simonsohn did not specify how. R' Zalman Rapa died of plague in 1575 and his eulogy was delivered by R' Shmuel Yehuda Katzenellenbogen, son of the Maharam of Padua. I am seeking any genealogical information in this 8 page eulogy written in Rashi script. I am not seeking a translation. I am only asking the reader to skim the section and report whether there is any information regarding the family connection between the Rapa and Katzenellenbogen families, and if so on which line (so that I may then proceed to translate the excerpt). I have attempted to cut and paste in complete sentences, but if I erred then please refer to the following segment for the extra words. NB: Since this is scanned from an old book, there could be some 'bleed' of print through the paper from the other side. (Segment 1) View the post, there are no responses
