Gravestone for Aron Weiss, who died on February 24, 1909. Stone survives in the Koźmin cemetery. Photograph kindly taken and provided by Paweł Bajerlein. I would appreciate help translating the Hebrew. From the German text, I understand Aron was 95 at the time of his death, which occurred on 3rd of Adar, 5669. Thank you in advance!

4/17/2024 3:55 PM Here lies

an unblemished and honest man, fearing Heaven,

the rabbi [?] AHARON

son of the rabbi [?] Meir

He passed away on Wednesday, 3 Adar 5669

and was buried on the next day, on Thursday, the 4th of that month.

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

The names of the deceased and his father are each preceded by an abbreviation that MIGHT indicate that they were rabbis, although the grammar would be awkward. The same abbreviation might also represent the words, “lo, he was Reb ___”, with Reb being an honorary title, and not meaning rabbi. I realize that “lo, he was ___” sounds strange, but it is quite common on tombstones. I would suggest trying to find out rabbinical status, if any, from another source.

Aharon is Aaron; Meir means “one who brings light” and is pronounced MAY-eer.

The Hebrew does not give his age at death.
