Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

9/22/2021 12:54 PM I need help translating a Dutch death certificate into English. The certificate from the Rotterdam City Archives is for Artur Malina, who died on April 30, 1887. He was one year old. Artur’s parents were Isaac Malina and Emma Isaacs. I would like to know if the handwritten text provides more information.

Isaac Malina was the brother of my maternal great-grandmother. Isaac and his family lived in Berlin. I haven’t learned why they were in the Netherlands. Visiting relatives could be one explanation. Isaac was a rabbi, and that might be another explanation.

Thank you.

9/22/2021 12:53 PM This is the death record (Akta Zawichost 1896 D47) of Dobra NISENBAUM. A full translation would be nice but most important are the full names, surnames, patronymics/matronymics, professions, and places of her parents, their origins, house #, and spouse and any other relatives, survivors and witnesses, with ages, exact dates of death and of the record and cause of death. Thanks, Michael View the post with its 1 response

9/19/2021 11:53 AM This is a page from an 1858/1875 census in Balta, in what is now Ukraine. I am interested in Flikshtein families listed in lower half of the page.

I would like a transcription of the entries from 159/220(red) to the bottom of the page. Please include the original Cyrillic if possible.
