JewishGen-erosity — Yizkor Book Translations

Yizkor books open a unique and important window into Jewish life before World War II and during the Holocaust. After the war, survivors from many towns in Eastern Europe and other places gathered together to remember their families, friends and institutions of their destroyed communities. The Yizkor (memorial) books they produced were written in Hebrew, Yiddish and occasionally other languages. JewishGen launched the Yizkor book translation project in 1994. Of the approximately 2,000 Yizkor books that have been written, JewishGen translated over 100 and aims to eventually translate all of them. While each Yizkor book holds special interest to the descendants of people from the town that book describes, for anyone interested in Jewish life, the Yizkor books portray a profound polychromatic image of prewar European Jewish civilization.

We invite you to support this worthy project by donating to the Yizkor Book Translation General Fund. Depending on the number of pages, each Yizkor book translation can cost between $15,000 and $20,000 USD.
