Translation of
Apt A Town Which Does Not Exist Any More
(Apt: Sefer zikaron le-ir va-em be-yisrael)
Project Synopsis
Complete the translation of the book written in Yiddish that has not yet been translated into English, and post with images (photos, maps, etc) as permission allows. This material will be available to all visitors of the JewishGen website. Once completely translated, the book will be made available in a print edition available for purchase from JewishGen.
The historical book was originally published primarily in Yiddish by the Apt Organization in Israel, USA, Canada and Brazil. The book was published in Tel Aviv January 1966 by former residents and Shoah survivors from the town of Opatow (Apt). The book consists of 23 pages of English and 441 pages of Yiddish including multiple pages of photos with accompanying captions. The material contained in the book is penned by a number of authors who share their firsthand experience before, during and following the Holocaust. The book offers a comprehensive history of Apt spanning from the 17th century to the 20th century with insights into cultural life and the Jewish experience.
Key Audiences
The primary audience for this book consists of descendants of those who lived in Apt and surrounding environs. The book contains original source material on the history of the Jewish people in the region making it a useful resource for those interested in this history. The book covers a range of literary genres including personal narrative, reflections and poetry.
Project Importance
This book is a vibrant collection of many voices now silenced through the passage of time. The original authors had many reasons to write their stories and those reasons became more significant each day with the alarming and frightening rise in virulent antisemitism. The photos serve as a resource for those descendants searching for ancestry.

Specific tasks the Project Coordinator will perform include proofreading, editing, and preparing the work for submission to the Yizkor Book Project. The resulting translations will be posted, as they are completed, on the JewishGen Yizkor Book Translations site.
