Translation of the
Ataky Memorial Book
(Yad le-Ataki: sefer zikaron le-kehilah yehudit be-Besarabia)
Project Synopsis
This project is being initiated to fund a complete English translation of the Ataky Memorial Book, containing 410-pages about life prior to and during the Holocaust in Ataky (Otaci). English translations of some portions of this book (Table of Contents, lists of people who perished in the Holocaust, one family's genealogy in list form, etc.) are currently available on JewishGen at: https://jewishgen.org/Yizkor/Otaci/Otaci.html. The Ataky Memorial Book was originally published in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1993. (Editors: Zrubavel Seker, Landsmanschaften of Ataky in Israel, Tel Aviv in Hebrew and Yiddish)
Key Audiences
The primary audiences for this material are: (1) historians researching Jewish and Eastern European history; (2) genealogists/family historians tracing their roots in Ataky (Otaci); and (3) Holocaust researchers.
Project Importance
Yizkor (memorial) books are invaluable sources of information on once vibrant towns, primarily in central and Eastern Europe, whose Jewish populations were destroyed in the Holocaust. The Ataky Memorial Book documents the lives of the Jews of Ataky (Otaci), a small village that sits on the southwestern bank of the Dniester River in modern-day Moldova. In particular, this book covers a variety of subjects, including family interviews, education, literature, arts, landmarks, etc. Based on a review of the translated Table of Contents, it also appears to contain approximately 50 pages that document the Holocaust and its impact on the Jews of Ataky, as told through survivors.
