Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

114584 Translation - Tombstone

6/14/2026 4:16 PM I have a series of photos of gravestones I took when I traveled to Kopaihorod in the early 1990s. Please excuse the amateur quality of them. On some I am aware that only part of the inscription is visible. Please translate the Hebrew and or Russian as appropriate. Many thanks.

6/14/2026 4:15 PM This is a card sent by my Grandmother Frieda Kohn in Borschow to my Uncle Harry Rosenblatt in Winnipeg, Canada. My Yiddish is not good enough to translate the card. I would greatly appreciate translation into English or Hebrew. Many thanks. View the post with its 1 response
114676 Interpretation

6/10/2026 4:03 PM We always understood that our great-grandfather's Hebrew name was Moshe Yehudah. That's what our grandfather told us, and how our grandfather was identified (ben Moshe Yehudah). We just noticed that the grave of our great-grandfather seems to say "Moshe Yudah" -- no Hebrew letter hay. Is this likely an error? Is there another explanation?

Many thanks.

114667 Translation - Polish

6/10/2026 4:01 PM From Skanoteka.

Akta 2 is my great-great-great-great-great-grandfather’s 1848 death record from Rypin, Płock, Poland. I would like it translated in full (or at least everything that isn’t the standard wording of a death record).

Names that I would expect to see in the text are:
- the deceased: Lewin GROTSZTEYN/GROSZTEJN.
- his son: Rubin GROTSZTEYN.

Thanks so much! Hopefully the handwriting isn’t too hard to read.
