Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

8/1/2021 12:06 PM This seems to be a notation in a book of residents for Belchatow, in Lodz. I am interested in a translation of everything, of which there is not much. It would be great to know the date of this notation, the address where my relative lived, etc. View the post with its 2 responses
94636 Translation - German

8/1/2021 12:06 PM I can make out that this article is about Siegfried Landau, a Vienna coal dealer wanted for forgery. He fled to New York with another man's wife in June 1903.

But my German isn't good enough for me to understand all the details. I'd be grateful for a full translation of the article, if possible, or if that's too much to ask for, the last paragraph, please.

Thank you.

8/1/2021 12:04 PM Could anyone translate this? I'm not sure if it's Hebrew or Yiddish or something else. It was on the back of a photo of my grandfather who was perhaps around 20 years old. The photo might have been around 1913 if I guessed his age correctly. View the post with its 1 response
