Bessarabia Group Meeting - Monday, August 2, 11.15am, Yefim Kogan - Leader and Coordinator of JewishGen Bessarabia Group.
The meeting is open to anyone with roots or interest in the region historically known as Bessarabia, an area now comprising the Moldova Republic and parts of Ukraine. We also researching Transnistria, a breakaway republic from Moldova. It used to be part of Kherson and Podolia gubernias. At the end of the 19th century and before the War, Bessarabia had significant Jewish presence. The Bessarabia SIG was organized at the end of 2011 to help people in their Bessarabian genealogical research.

How do you make sense of genealogical information you found? Yefim Kogan
You can get a lot of information about your ancestors from searching JewishGen.org.
Is this information all clear?
Why is this information sometimes different from what you knew before about your family?
In this session, we will explore vital records, Revision Lists, burial records, and other lists to analyze and understand what we find. These documents include the following information to consider: Names, Dates, Towns, Estate/Class, Profession, etc.
We will look at the 19th century original records from Russian Empire, Bessarabia gubernia, and compare them to translated records at JewishGen.
Are all original records, correct?
Is translation accurate enough?
Are we translating everything from the original record? For example, dates from the Julian Calendar used for 18 - 19th centuries records are different from the Gregorian Calendar we are using now.
Your ancestors were born in one place, but according to the record were registered in completely different place… What that means?
We will explore the process of translation records at JewishGen, and focus on issues, complications with some records.
