8/2/2026 5:13 PM Three handwritten Yiddish letters, dated 23 Aug 1956, 21 Jul(?) 1950 and 21 or 31 Jan 1955. The accompanying postcards shows they were sent from Baku (sender: I. Sh. GENDLER) to Novotroitsk, Chkalov (now Orenburg) oblast, USSR. Addressee: Sarra KHALDEI / Chaldei / Haldey / חלדי, b. 1887 in Kaunas; the family lived in Palestine (Haifa, Jerusalem) before moving to the USSR in 1930.

I would be grateful for a transcription and translation, and especially for:

Personal names, place names and dates.
The signature: who signs, and what relationship word is used (I think I read "דיין טרייע").
In the 1950 letter an underlined passage reads "23 [month?] 1880" and "1950", with "70" nearby - is this a 70th birthday or a birth/death notice?

I would love to have a translation of this, my mother left it to me when she died and all the information I have is this clipping plus a letter in Yiddish (also submitted) responding to a cousin who sent it to him. I don't know if the note was written by the letter's author (seems unlikely) or added by a family member later. I also don't know if it's Hebrew or Yiddish. 8/2/2026 5:10 PM I would be grateful for help with one word.

This is a Jewish birth register from Przemyslany, Galicia, 1908. The entry follows the register's usual formula: the mother's name, then "rit. an" and her partner's name, then a word or two, then "Tochter des" and her own parents.

My question is the word boxed in red. It seems to begin "Leinwand". Is it the surname Leinwand, or the start of a trade, such as Leinwandhaendler or Leinwandfabrikant?

I should say that the image is poor - the leaf is torn, the contrast is low, and the page is slightly tilted. I have put a clear "Leinwand" from elsewhere in the same register beside it for comparison.

8/2/2026 5:10 PM I would be grateful for a second opinion on one word.

This is a Jewish birth register from Przemyslany, Galicia, 1905. In a single cell the clerk writes a man's first name, and then a few words later writes a second word, which I have been reading as an abbreviated occupation, "Handl."

Both are marked on the image. My question is simply this: are they the same word, or two different ones?

This follows on from an earlier question of mine, in which a kind responder suggested that the second word might be a name rather than a trade. I would rather not say which way I lean.

8/2/2026 5:08 PM We have some relatives that were buried at Mt Carmel Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. My grandparents and great grandparents along with some aunts and uncles.
