8/5/2026 4:15 PM Handwritten letter in Hebrew sent from Egypt to the rabbis of Safed, 1923, with the embossed seal of LE GRAND RABBINAT D'ALEXANDRIE ET SES DEPENDANCES at the foot of the page. From the Safed Jewish Community collection at the Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People: CAHJP IL-Sa-459, shelfmark Sfat 7-6 (NLI record 997013405645205171). It is addressed to the dayanim of Safed, among them Rabbi Yeshua Palagi. A full transcription and translation would be very welcome. Especially: 1. Who wrote and signed it, and in what capacity within the Alexandria rabbinate? 2. What matter does it deal with? 3. Does the surname MALUL / MELLOUL / MALLOUL appear, or any reference to the rabbi of Tanta? I research Rabbi Moshe Haim Malul, who served as rabbi of Tanta in Egypt in exactly these years and later as a dayan in Cairo. Thank you very much. View the post with its 1 response

8/5/2026 4:15 PM The two witness signatures at the foot of an illuminated ketubah written in SAFED, 13 Adar 5642 = 1882. National Library of Israel record 990003034930205171 (original: Zucker Family collection, New York). This image is the lower band of the document, enlarged. The NLI catalogue records the parties as: groom Shimon ben Yaakov Levi; bride Roza bat Avraham Wolf Ashkenazi; witness David ben Shalom Malka; witness "[Moshe] Haim Malul" - with "Moshe" in square brackets, i.e. supplied by the cataloguer. Both signatures are dense Sephardi monogram flourishes and I cannot read either. I would be very grateful if someone could: 1. Transcribe both signatures. 2. Say which of the two is the Malul signature, and whether the given name written is Haim alone or Moshe Haim. I research Rabbi Moshe Haim Malul, born in Safed, later rabbi of Tanta in Egypt. 8/5/2026 4:14 PM Handwritten letter in Sephardi cursive, on the printed letterhead of the Committee of Rabbis of the Sephardi Community of Safed (Vaad Rabbanei Adat HaSephardim be-Ir HaKodesh Tzfat / Comite des Rabbins de la Communaute Sefaradim a Safed, Palestine). It comes from the archive of Moshe David Gaon at the National Library of Israel, from his file on Rabbi Yeshua (Moshe Yeshua) Palagi of Safed, ARC. 4* 795 05 1057. I would be very grateful for a full transcription and translation. Three points especially: 1. The date line at top right. I read the day as 12 or 13 of Shevat, but I cannot decide the year: does it read Tav-Resh-Peh-Tet (1929) or Tav-Resh-Tsadi-Tet (1939)? 2. The addressee line - to whom is the letter written? 3. The record is Warsaw Birth Record No. 436 (1910), birth on 28 April 1909.
The father is clearly Мендель Корнблюмъ (Mendel Kornblum).
JRI-Poland indexes the child's name as Нафтуль (Naftul), while AI transcription reads it as Иосиф.
What does the handwritten name actually say?

8/5/2026 4:13 PM This is a birth record from the Rumsiskes Jewish community metrical book (fond 1226, inv. 1, file 1327, pages 34v-35), obtained from the Lithuanian State Historical Archives. The closing note at the bottom of the page dates it to August 1867. I'm trying to confirm the father's given name in the second entry on the left page (the male birth, mohel Leizer Peker). My own reading comes out as "Vulf" (Wulf), but I expected it to read "Daniel" based on other family records - I may be misreading it. Could someone confirm: (1) the father's given name and patronymic, (2) the mother's given name and her home community, and (3) the child's given name? I believe this reads: father Daniel, patronymic possibly Iozelevich/Yuzelevich, mother Basa, child Alter. Could someone confirm the father's full name (given name and patronymic) and the mother's name? I believe it deals with news of a tragedy back home in Poland, and also perhaps some questions about their hair goods business. The elusive Jacob ... so in 1905 a Jacob died in London leaving behind a wife Deborah who allegedly married him in 1894 .... This record might conceivably be the record for his first marriage.... if so, then he might be my grandfathers uncle

I would really appreciate as full a translation as possible
