Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

8/15/2021 12:09 PM I found this letter written many years ago. It was sent by a great aunt who was born in Yampol. I am hoping she talks about our Zeid family.

Thank you for any help you can provide

94801 Translation - Hungarian

8/11/2021 12:59 PM This is my gg-uncle Erno Gottfried, apparently in a prison record for the crime of "theft," in a record from the Royal Criminal Court of Budapest Prison (original record is indexed at https://archives.hungaricana.hu/hu/lear/Fogoly/248710/ )

If they appear on the record, I would be particularly interested in the details of Erno's crime and punishment, as well as any details of where he was living at the time, or any other relatives besides his parents who might have been mentioned. Erno was born in Bekecs, Zemplen County, but was known to have been living in Budapest at the time of his death in 1939, so he could well have moved there much earlier.

(Note: this is a different prison document for Erno than the other one I uploaded this week - it appears he had two run-ins with the law, once in 1906 and once in 1907.)

8/11/2021 12:58 PM This is my gg-uncle Sandor Gottfried, apparently in a prison record for the crime of "theft," in a record from the Royal Criminal Court of Budapest Prison (original record is indexed at https://archives.hungaricana.hu/hu/lear/Fogoly/240965/ )

If they appear on the record, I would be particularly interested in the details of Sandor's crime and punishment, as well as any details of where he was living at the time, or any other relatives besides his parents who might have been mentioned.

(About all I know for sure of Sandor is that his parents were Jakob Gottfried and Biri/Borisch Sparger, and that he was born in Bekecs in Zemplen county circa 1884, so I'm curious whether he was already living in Budapest in 1902 or whether this crime occurred elsewhere. My family lore is that Sandor died in Hungary in the 1918-19 influenza pandemic.)

94789 Translation - Yiddish

8/11/2021 12:56 PM I would be grateful if someone could translate the Yiddish text on the back of an old photo I have. It was probably written by my grandmother to her son who had recently emigrated to the US from Storojinetz, Bukowina in the 1920's. I realize that some of the text is not readable, however any partial translation would be very welcome.
Thank you in advance,
