Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

94775 Photo Identification

8/11/2021 12:54 PM update 16 aug 2021:
I learned from a gracious volunteer on the Discussion Group that the initials on the sign likely are in German: R.P.Z.A.A. which could mean - Russische Polnische Zivil Arbeit Abteilung. translated as "Russian Polish Civil Labor Department."

I assume the number 23 identifies the camp number. MIGHT THE NUMBERS 10 AND 48 BE BARRACKS NUMBERS? One more thing to look into. Any ideas would be most welcome!
Thank you

Original Post: This is a photo of a group of men who are, I think, in a POW camp in Austria. My gf is among them. He served in the Russian Army in WWI, broke his leg and was captured. Then he was sent to a hospital and later a POW camp.

I'd love to know the significance of the signs being held by the group: one says "RPZAA 23" (but i don't know what language it is) and 2 small ones say "10" and "48". Does anyone know what the signs mean?
thank you

8/11/2021 12:53 PM Hello!

For this birth record of Isaak Salamon (entry #38) can you please help with the names of the mother's parents, and names of any other relatives besides parents that might be present in the other columns.

The image is rather faint. Sorry about that, but I'd appreciate any assistance you can offer.

Thank you.

I would like a translation in English of this 2 page letter in German from Hans Neurath to Robert Neurath, both of Modling bei Wein, Austria after Hans Neurath had emigrated to Palestine. Hans was one of the 137 Jews killed by the Italian bombing of Tel Aviv on September 9, 1940, and is buried there. Robert had just arrived in Australia.
