Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

10/13/2021 10:26 AM this is the first page of a letter written by my grandmother. I'm not sure of the language it is written in but it looks like Yiddish. I don't know who it is written to or when it was written. The only thing I recognized was my grandmother's name at the end of the letter. I found this letter in my father's papers after he died. 95539 Translation - Russian

10/13/2021 10:26 AM I understand 95% of this birth registration for Liba Chazda. Please translate only the lines I've underlined or marked in blue. Basically: the names and occupations of the witnesses, the last line giving the reason for the lateness, and the special notations made in the left-hand margin (in the blue box). Thanks very much, Ed View the post with its 1 response

10/13/2021 10:26 AM I understand 95% of this 1876 birth registration for Ryszka Chazda (Akt 7)but would like a translation for the words underlined in blue. Basically, this is the name of the second witness plus the reason stated for the lateness (as complete as possible). Thank you, Ed View the post with its 1 response

95541 Translation - Polish

10/10/2021 12:36 PM This the entry for the birth of Benzion Baumrind (Mandel)in 1888. But instead of following the columns on the page, this is written across them.

I would love to know what it says. I think that its Polish but am not sure.

Thanks.

95542 Translation - Russian

10/10/2021 12:36 PM I would be grateful for a translation of the first four columns - not the column headings - just the handwritten information such as first and last name, parents names, date of birth, and what looks like current status.
Is there any other relevant genealogical information?
Thank you for your help, Olivier
