This course is intended to showcase the student’s research. Writing a complete family history can be overwhelming, so let’s start by writing a short family narrative. The report can focus on an individual, a family story, an ancestral town, an immigration experience, a family photo, or other related topic. The objective of this class is to provide the opportunity to write a report of limited scope within a short timeframe.
This four-week course will offer tips on how to add interest to the chosen story, using context and description, and will cover the mechanics of writing and genealogical best practices to create an effective report. Weekly Zoom sessions to discuss the lessons and answer any questions.
The course covers the following modules: Getting Started (topics and scope), Crafting Your Story, Nonfiction Writing Techniques, and Editing.
Prerequisites:
This course is for intermediate to advanced researchers. It is intended for people who have been doing family research for several years, who want to share their accumulated research with others, particularly family members. Students must be comfortable using computers. The welcome letter will give specific instructions on the private forum we will be using for the class.
Students will have the opportunity to share work in progress, ask questions, and receive constructive advice from the instructor. They should plan to devote at least 8-10 hours per week to read the lessons, write their reports, and participate in the discussions. Final papers will be due at the final class. Since the timeframe is short, there is a limit of fifteen (15) pages for student stories, although most stories will be shorter.
Tuition for this course is $150. Registration is now open. Class size is limited and enrollment will close when course is full.
Please submit a brief (1-2 paragraph) description of the project to the instructor prior to enrolling; we will also be discussing our topics during our first session.
