Using AI for Jewish Research

JewishGen Education is pleased to offer a new, interactive lecture series: Using AI for Jewish Research. This series explores how artificial intelligence can assist in Jewish genealogical, historical, and textual research. Through live demonstrations and participant-driven exercises, we will explore what AI can and cannot do, how to work with it effectively, and where the field is heading.

Whether you're new to AI or already experimenting with ChatGPT and image tools, this course will give you practical skills, sharpen your critical judgment, and open new paths for discovery.

Format

Three Zoom sessions (1.5 hours each)

Schedule

Three consecutive Sundays (June 1, 8, and 15, at 10 AM PT (1PM ET))

Each session includes 60 minutes of interactive lecture and 20–30 minutes of live exercises using AI tools.

Course Outline

Session 1: Understanding the Tools

  • What AI is (and what it’s not)
  • AI’s strengths and limitations in research
  • Tools for:
    • Document analysis
    • Transcription and translation (Hebrew, Yiddish, Russian, etc.)
    • OCR and image interpretation
  • Case studies from Jewish research applications

Session 2: Partnering with AI

  • The role of the question and the prompt
  • The researcher as guide: how to lead AI, not follow it
  • Training your AI: memory, style, knowledge base
  • Building a knowledge grid to support your research
  • Troubleshooting: how to tell when AI is wrong or confused

Session 3: Applying AI to Writing and Synthesis

  • From notes to write-ups: AI as a drafting partner
  • Organizing evidence and constructing genealogical proof
  • Using AI to draft citations, timelines, bios, and charts
  • Ethical use of AI: transparency and sourcing
  • Planning your next AI-supported project

Who Should Attend

This course is ideal for researchers at all levels—from beginners curious about AI, to experienced genealogists looking to integrate new tools into their process. Note that enrollment is limited to 10 people.
