Research in Galicia

Did you have ancestors from Galicia? Would you like to understand the resources for researching them both online and onsite?

This course is designed for those who have a Galician ancestor, have done their U.S. research, know one town name and are relatively new to Galician research. Please note: This course will not cover U.S. or U.K. research.

We will focus on developing a methodology for foreign records research, including: (1) the Family Document containing summaries of all the necessary information about your family branch, (2) the Research Table of where you've searched, (3) Your Tasks To-Do list, and (4) A JGFF list of others researching your surname or shtetl.

This course focuses on researching town information and vital records on four key websites:

The course includes the historical background of Galicia, naming conventions, how to use the Polish Archives-what is online and what is not, websites and records (census, military, directories etc), Holocaust research, languages, hiring a researcher and more!

Format: This is a personal online mentoring program. The class features comprehensive written lesson material, 3 ZOOM sessions (one each week) and an online FORUM where you'll be encouraged to post one ancestral branch (one surname), set goals for your research, and work one-on-one with the instructor. Communication with your instructor takes place on the forum in your personal thread which is like an online chat between you and the instructor. This personal mentoring process is unique to JewishGen education. The online forum has no scheduled times as our students are international, enabling everyone to read/view/post at leisure.

Please select one branch, one surname and one town for which you have the immigrant's

  1. Name (preferably the Jewish name)
  2. Approximate year of birth, and
  3. Town of birth or residence.

To best utilize this course, we suggest you have 8-10 hours per week to read the lessons, research online and interact with the FORUM. Our experience has been that those students who are able to spend the time, reap the rewards.

Tuition for Research in Galicia is $150.
