Research in Galicia

Did you have ancestors from Galicia? Would you like to understand all the resources for researching them?
This course is designed for those who have a galician ancestor and town name, and wish to further their knowledge of Galicia, both on the Internet and in the Archives.

We will focus on developing a methodology for foreign research, including: (1) the Family Document containing all the necessary information about your family branch, (2) the Research Table of where you've searched and what you've learned, (3) a list of others researching your surname or shtetl, and (4) a descriptive paragraph to connect with others.

This course will cover 4 websites in detail: JewishGen, Jewish Records Indexing - Poland, GesherGalicia and RTR Foundation. Course Material will include 6-7 lessons (10-20 pages each), delivered online (which you can download) covering the historical background of Galicia, naming conventions, the key websites, formats of vital records, languages, hiring a researcher and more!

Format: This is a personal mentoring program which features an online FORUM where you'll be encouraged to post one ancestral branch (one surname), set goals for your research, and work one-on-one with the instructor to research your branch; here you can ask any question you have. This personal mentoring process is unique to JewishGen education. Our classes have no scheduled times as our students are international, enabling everyone to read/view/post at leisure.

Please select a branch for which you have the immigrants

  1. Name (preferably the Jewish name)
  2. Approximate year of birth, and
  3. Town of birth
.

To best utilize this course, we suggest you have 8-10 hours per week to read the lessons, research online and interact with the FORUM. Our experience has been that those students who are able to spend the time, reap the rewards.

Tuition for this Course is $200. Registration opens two weeks before class begins: Registration is limited to 10 students.
