Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

4/20/2003 This is a line from an 1891 ship manifest from Hamburg. It may be my great uncle Moses Pack. The problem is the town,
Bordal, which does not exist. Yet, the usually accurate Germans at "Link to your roots" entered it that way on the typewritten form. Also, does the next column say "bäker" (baker)? That is what my printed version says. Thanks for your help.

4/13/2003 In this photo from Ukraine in the 1920s, we're not sure if these are
siblings or a couple. The family is Shwaisberg, from the old Podolia
region. (If you can read Yiddish, please look at the accompanying
photo of the inscription on the back.) Many thanks. Michelle Frager

4/13/2003 This Yiddish inscription is on the back of the 1920s photo of
two teenagers in Ukraine. We believe the signature to say
"Shwaisberg." If you can help, we will be very grateful.
