Search the Archive

Browse the VM archive to view user-generated images of Jewish historical subjects, documents, culture and places, up close. A new response feature now allows you to add your response to those older, often unanswered archived images. Please respond with relevant information when you can. Here's how. Sort the first column (VM ID) by clicking on the column title for the oldest or the latest images. Select an image. Next click "Add Response".

Alternatively, narrow your search by clicking "Search Archive," above, and type specific search terms.

Your input deserves our thanks and praise, for it may help a Gen'er in new and rewarding ways.
Countless unnamed and dedicated volunteers from across the globe deserve our gratitude. They freely offer their time and skills responding to ViewMate requests. Giving to others will come back to them.

Note: Viewmate's first saved image is #227.

To sort by a column, click the column title. Then click the sort icon [D] to reverse the order.
You will be able to view responses online if available. Items will open in a new browser window.

112346 Translation - Tombstone

10/8/2025 1:54 PM This is the second image of two associated with my first image submission re Hyman & Cippa.
I noticed this section of the inscription on their headstone that was very weathered, so have taken a second photo specifically of it.
I’m interested in what it translates into.

10/8/2025 1:54 PM I believe this (Act # 41) is the birth certificate of Israel Abraham Gotlieb, my greatgreatgrandfather. I would like a translation of this document (in particular names of the parents, their occupations if any, addresses, names of the witnesses, date of birth, and any useful information for genealogical purpose)
Thank you

112316 Translation - Russian

10/8/2025 1:53 PM Attached is the very (!) short page no. 5 of a 6-page letter sent to my great-grandmother Bronya Riskin in the Land of Israel, by her brother Matvey Levin in the Soviet Union. Would like assistance in its translation.

Please note the previous page ends with the following: "Привет от Тоси и Пети. Целую. твой брат." It seems as though the letter reached its end, but there is a short addition that ends with the Levin signature as well. I believe it belongs to the same letter, although I may be mistaken.

Many thanks.

112299 Do you recognize?

10/8/2025 1:52 PM My mother-in-law came to Israel in 1947 with a metal suitcase as demonstrated in the attached picture. Last year we found it in the shed of one of her relatives.
W e wonder what the BN 74 that written on suitcase means?
