Rafael Ben Hirshel
17 Iyar 5760 (= May 22, 2000)

May his soul be bound in the bundle of life.

8/25/2012 2:14 AM Hello Judith,

Ralph Gluck's Hebrew name is Rafael Ben/(son of) Hirshel/Hershel. Both he and his father each have a single given name. The word "Ben" means "son of"

You ask about the code in the instruction portion. That is probably for use of the cemetery personnel or stonecutter, and perhaps they number their letters and symbols for the benefit of the workers....Jo
8/25/2012 6:23 PM Yes, the Hebrew characters are coded as numbers according to their posistion in the Hebrew alphabet including the finals: 27 letters from 1 = aleph = 1 to 27 = tav, 28 = geresh, 29 = gershayim. A slash denotes a space between letters. The numbers are written in the same direction as the Hebrew text (left to right). This simple scheme maake sure that a stone mason not familiar with Hebrew can avoid mistakes by confounding similar-looking Hebrew letters. You can easily verify this by comparing with the inscription (the first line with the name is missing).
