Leo:

YEHUDA son of Yitzchak the Cohen

[in the center]: he survived the Shoah [Holocaust] – a painter

He passed away 4 Adar I 5771
--------------------------------------------------------------------
In case you are wondering about a possible connection between the secular name Leo and the religious name Yehuda: Yehuda is Hebrew for Judah. The symbol for the tribe of Judah was a lion. Therefore, some men with either of the name Yehuda have a secular name related to lion, such as Leo, Leonard, etc.

Yitzchak is Isaac.

The deceased and his father were Cohanim (plural of Cohen). A Cohen is a member of the priestly tribe. The first priest was Aaron, Moses' brother, and this designation is passed down from father to son. Cohanim had specific functions in the Temples, and still receive special recognition -- and have special obligations -- today.

The phrase “he survived the Holocaust” is followed a word that was unclear, as the text has no vowels. One possible reading was as Tzayar, although this word is sometimes spelled differently. Tzayar means painter. I did a quick Google search on his name plus “holocaust” and “painter” and found this page: https://www.ushmm.org/collections/the-museums-collections/curators-corner/art-in-exile-the-leo-yeni-collection. You may already be aware of this?

He passed away during the month of “Adar I”. During a Jewish leap year, the standard 12th month, Adar, is replaced by two months: Adar I and Adar II.

The 4th day of Adar I in the year 5771 began at sunset on February 7th, 2011, and ended at sunset on the 8th. The secular date on the stone is the 7th, which would indicate that he passed away between sunset and midnight of that date.
