4/24/2024 11:08 PM Here lies

our dear mother

YENTE daughter of Chaya Iteh

6 Tishri 5728

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For some reason, one of the letters in her name, Yente, is smaller than the others. Yente is a Yiddish name.

Unusually, her father’s name is not given; instead, her mother’s name appears. It is a double name. The first part, Chaya, is Hebrew and means ‘she lives’. The ‘ch’ is pronounced as in Chanukah. The second part, Iteh [EE-teh] is a Yiddish name.

By the way: Some people might mistakenly read the name Chaya as Chai, as that is what it looks like at first glance. However, there is an apostrophe at the end, representing a missing letter, Hay. This is sometimes done because otherwise the last two letters of the name would spell out one of the names of G-d.

The 6th of Tishri, 5728, began at sunset on October 9th, 1967, and ended at sunset on the 10th.
