4/24/2024 10:46 PM Louis:

Here lies

Layb BenTziyon son of Reb Gershon

He passed away 4 Nisan 5706

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

The deceased had a double name.

Layb is Yiddish for lion.

“BenTziyon”, which means “son of Zion” is often shown as two separate words, “Ben Tziyon), and is also often shown as a hyphenated name: Ben-Tziyon or Ben-Zion.

Gershon is a Biblical name.

Gussie:

Here lies

Gi’eshsheh [?] daughter of Reb Layb

She passed away 22 Cheshvan 5720
----------------------------------------------------
Gussie’s Hebrew name (actually, a Yiddish name) is a bit of a mystery. It appears as if her name might have been incorrectly engraved and a correction was squeezed in later. At first glance, her name appears to be Ehsheh. However, there are two small letters squeezed in, in front of her name (at the right edge), making the name something like “gee-EH-sheh” (with a hard G). This is not a common name, as far as I know, but it is a relatively good sound-alike for Gussie.

Her father’s name, Layb, as mentioned above, means lion. Some men with this name have a secular name related to lion, such as Leo, Leonard, Leon, etc.
