Grave stone of my great great grandmother Celia (Shapiro?) Miller. Maybe from Kovno, Lithuania. Father's name may have been Meier. Buried in Mt. Zion cemetery, Brooklyn.

An honest woman, Mrs.

TZIPPAH daughter of Reb Meir

She passed away

8 Av 5679

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

Tzippah is a Yiddish name derived from the Hebrew Tziporah, which means female bird (this was also the name of Moses’ wife).

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi. The name Meir is pronounced MAY-eer.

The 8th of Av, 5679, began at sunset on August 3rd, 1919, and ended at sunset on August 4th, 1919. This seems to correspond with the secular date on the stone, which is also a bit difficult to read.
