3/20/2024 2:54 PM Hello Linda,

The translation is as follows:

Here lies Menachem Mendel, son of "Reb" Yehuda Leyb, who died on the 5th day of the Hebrew month of Tamuz (followed by the Hebrew year). May his soul be bound up in the bonds of everlasting life."

The word "Reb" is used as a title of honor preceding his double given name.....Jo
3/20/2024 2:59 PM Here lies

MENACHEM MENDEL

son of Reb Yehudah Layb

He passed away 5 Tamuz 5698

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Menachem Mendel is a common double name, with Menachem being a Hebrew name and Mendel being a Yiddish derivation of Menachem [which is pronounced meh-NAH-chem, with the 'ch' as in Chanukah].

His father also had a ‘double’ Hebrew name: Yehudah (which is Hebrew for Judah) and Layb (which is Yiddish for lion). The symbol for the tribe of Judah was a lion. Therefore, some men with either of these names have a secular name related to lion, such as Leo, Leonard, etc.
