I would like to translate the Hebrew inscription on this tombstone (Charles Grodberg).

An honored man,

Unblemished and honest all of his days,

BETZALEL MENDEL

son of Reb Moshe Refael

Grodbert

He passed away 17 Shvat 5670.

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life

‘Reb’ is an honorific; the father of the deceased was not a rabbi. However, his own name is preceded by an abbreviation that represents the words “our teacher, the rabbi”. This normally indicates that the person had rabbinical ordination, not necessarily that he was the rabbi of a synagogue or community. I need to point out that this abbreviation occasionally appears in error (or, sometimes, simply as words of praise to indicate that the person was scholarly), so I would suggest trying to get confirmation of his rabbinical status – if any – from a second source.

Betzalel is a name from the Bible; he was the architect and builder of the traveling tabernacle (the Mishkan) that accompanied the Israelites during their years in the desert.

Mendel is a Yiddish name derived from the Hebrew Menachem.

Moshe is Moses. Refael is Raphael; it is the name of one of the angels. Some men with Moshe as part of their religious name have the secular name of Morris.
