About Yizkor Books
Yizkor books open a unique and important window into Jewish life before World War II and during the Holocaust. After the war, survivors gathered to memorialize their families and the destroyed communities they came from. The memorial books they produced — written in Hebrew, Yiddish, and occasionally other languages — preserve both a record of the Holocaust and a portrait of pre-war Jewish civilization that no official source could replicate.
JewishGen launched its Yizkor Book translation project in 1994. Of approximately 2,000 Yizkor books ever written, JewishGen has translated over 400 — and aims to eventually translate all of them. Each translation costs between $6,000 and $36,000 depending on length.
