3/1/2011 8:43 AM here burried
Rabbi Anshen Nisan
son of rabbi Pinchas
died 22 Elul Tav Reish Pe Heit
9/5/2024 6:20 PM I came across this posting and noticed an error or two
TOP ROW: the initials for Here Rests or Here is buried
Reb Anshen Nisan
son of Reb Pinchas
died 22 day of the Jewish month of Elul in the year 5685
The five letters on the bottom row are the initials of a verse "May his soul be bound in the bundle of life"
A direct quote from the Book of the Prophet Samuel / Shmuel A, 25: 29, that is traditionally engraved on Jewish tombstones.
Reb does not mean Rabbi it is a respectable way of referring directly to a man.
Error in Date engraved:
22nd of Elul, 5685 fell on Sept. 11, 1925 not in 1929.
If the English date is correct then the Date in hebrew should have said תרפט not תרפה (5689 not 5685)
Sept. 27, 1929 was the 22 day of Elul in the year 5689.
The engraver made a mistake
