2/23/2011 7:48 AM Here lies an honest man, superlative in Torah, god fearing, ... integrity.. faith.. study the Torah...
77 Years of age, Our teacher and Rabbi Reb Eliezer son of Ephraim GERZON, died 17 Tishri 5666 (16 Oct 1905)
May his soul be bound up in the bond of everlasting life.
12/23/2024 6:01 AM This is a beautiful epitaph paraphrasing scripture and the Talmud to describe the piety and scholarship of the deceased.
Top two letters are an acronym for Here is buried or Here rests
A man of integrity, Greatness (Scholarship) in Torah and Fearing (God) (Book of the prophet Iyuv-Job,1:1,8), (Talmud Kiddushin 32B)
he walked with God, unblemished, with faith (Bereishis- Genesis 6:9, Devorim-Deuteronomy 32:4)
he frequented the entrances of the study halls diligently for Torah (study) and for prayer. (Mishlei- Proverbs 8:34)

The Rabbi, our master and teacher, Rabbi, Reb Eliezer son of Reb Ephraim
Gerzon
he went to the hereafter on the 17th day of the Jewish month of Tishrei in the 5666 (year since the world was created)
The five letters on the bottom row are the initials of a verse "May his soul be bound in the bundle of life"
A direct quote from the Book of the Prophet Samuel / Shmuel A, 25: 29, that is traditionally engraved on Jewish tombstones.

Observation:
he died on the 17th day of Tishrei which is the 3rd day of the Jewish holiday of Sukkos. Sukkos and Simchas Torah together is over a week long.
17th of Tishrei 5666 began at sunset Sunday evening October 15, 1905 and ended Monday night Oct. 16. Although he was probably buried that Tuesday the family did not begin to sit shiva for him until the holiday ended after nightfall Sunday evening October 22.
WHat should have been a festive week of Holiday and family became a week of sadness.
