On  Response
9/14/2025 2:33 PM Here lies

the respected and modest woman

Mrs. TZIPORAH daughter of Reb Moshe, may he rest in peace,

Wife of the Chaver Reb Eliezer Weinberg

A woman of valor, the glory of her husband, her son,

and her daughters, perfect, and honest, and pleasant

in her ways, she passed away at a satisfactory old age,

on the 27th day of Adar, 5742

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Tziporah is Hebrew for bird. It was also the name of Moses’ wife.

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Moshe is Moses. Some men with the name Moshe have a secular name of Morris or similar.

It is relatively uncommon for a woman’s gravestone to include the name of her husband. When this does occur, it often means that her husband was a prominent member of the Jewish community.

Her husband’s name preceded by the title of “Chaver”. The literal translation of Chaver is “Friend”. If this person was of German-Jewish origin: Chaver was a title of honor awarded by German Jews. It was bestowed, in a synagogue ceremony, upon a man who had served the Jewish community with distinction for many years. This title then became part of his official Hebrew name. If this person was not of German-Jewish origin, but from Eastern Europe, then this word might also be translated as “comrade” or “member” [of a particular organization].

Eliezer [eh-lee-EH-zer] is a Biblical name.

The 27th of Adar, 5742, began at sunset on March 21st, 1982, and ended at sunset on the 22nd.
