I would appreciate a translation of the Hebrew on this stone. It is that of my great-grandfather, Solomon Hollander. I took it when I was in Romania. It was an unexpected discovery.

8/3/2025 5:44 PM Here lies an honest man who trod a path of integrity, our teacher and rabbi Tzvi son of Yisroel.
Died 21 Cheshvan in the year 5684
May his soul be bound up in the bond of life (acronym)

Our teacher and rabbi is an honorific, not a true title.

=============================================
Tzvi is is Hebrew for deer. The Yiddish word for deer is Hirsh. Because of this, some men with the Hebrew name Tzvi have a secular name that sounds similar to Hirsh, such as Harry, Harold, Herbert, etc.

'Reb' is an honorific; the deceased's father was not a rabbi. The name of the deceased, however, is preceded by an abbreviation that represents the words “our teacher, the rabbi”. This normally indicates that the person had rabbinical ordination, not necessarily that he was the rabbi of a synagogue or community. I need to point out that this abbreviation occasionally appears in error (or, sometimes, simply as words of praise to indicate that the person was scholarly), so I would suggest trying to get confirmation of his rabbinical status – if any – from a second source.

The month of Marcheshvan is also know by the shorter name of Cheshvan.

The 21st of Marcheshvan of the year 5684 began at sunset on October 30th, 1923, and ended at sunset on the 31st.
