8/1/2025 7:40 PM The Hebrew inscription on this gravestone reads: Avraham Yitzchak son of the honored Eliezer HaLevi... (with the date of death on the Hebrew calendar).
8/1/2025 8:04 PM P.S. "HaLevi" refers to the fact that the deceased was a Levite. i.e. a member of the Hebrew tribe of Levi.
8/3/2025 12:57 AM Here lies

AVRAHAM YITZCHAK son of Reb Eliezer the Levite

He passed away 12 Shvat 5714.

-------------------------------------------------
Yitzchak is Hebrew for Isaac.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

His father's name, Eliezer [eh-lee-EH-zer] is a Biblical name. It means "G-d is my helper". There are no rules for 'matching' religious and secular names, but there are some conventions. Eliezer is not one of those names were there is an 'obvious' or 'relatively common' secular name. The most direct transcription can be something like Eleazar. One convention is that the secular name begins with the same sound as the religious name, so you might find the father with a name such as Edward.

The deceased and his father were Levites, descended from Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. Levites had specific functions in the Temples, and still receive special recognition -- and have special obligations – today. Levite is a designation passed from father to son. The image of the pitcher at the top of the stone is an indication of a Levite, as one of the functions of Levites was (and still is) to wash the hands of the Cohanim (priests) before they bless the congregation.

Presumably the name Levenson is related to the Levite designation among the males in this family.
