I would appreciate a translation especially if it says "son of .....". Trying to find possible family.

7/13/2025 2:53 PM Here lies Ezriel son of Mordechai Leib the Levite
7/13/2025 4:16 PM Here lies Mr. AZRIEL son of Reb Mordechai Layb the Levite.

-----------------------------------------
Azriel [ahz-REE-ayl] is a Biblical name.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Mordechai is a Biblical name, from the Book of Esther. A secular equivalent might be Morris or Mordy or Marty or any name beginning with M.
Layb is Yiddish for lion. Some men with Layb as part of their religious name have a secular name related to lion, such as Leo, Leonard, Leon, etc.

Please keep in mind my previous remark: these are educated guesses only.

Note that the deceased and his father were Levites, descended from Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. Levites had specific functions in the Temples, and still receive special recognition -- and have special obligations – today. Levite is a designation passed from father to son.

If you find other gravestones for Levites, there might be an image of a pitcher at the top of the stone, as this is an indication of a Levite, since one of the functions of Levites was (and still is) to wash the hands of the Cohanim (priests) before they bless the congregation. (Not all stones of Levites have this image, as is the case here).
