Here lies

YESHAYA son of Reb Yerachmiel

He passed away on the first day of Rosh Chodesh Kislev 5716

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

------------------------------------------------
Yeshaya [yeh-SHAH-yah] is Hebrew for Isaiah.

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Yerachmiel [yeh-rach-MEE-ayl, with the ch as in Chanukah or Bach] is a Biblical name; it means ‘may G-d have mercy upon me”

“Rosh Chodesh”, literally the head of the month, also known as the New Moon, indicates the start of a new month. It can be a one-day or a two-day event. In this case, it was two days, and the first day of Rosh Chodesh of the month of Kislev was actually the 30th day of the previous month, which was the month of Cheshvan. In the year 5716 this date began at sunset on November 14th, 1955, and ended at sunset on the 15th. The secular date on the stone is the 14th, which would indicate that he passed away between sunset and midnight of that date.

Note that traditional Ashkenazic gravestones – with a few exceptions – show only the name of the father of the deceased, and not that of the mother.

==========================
Here lies

LEAH daughter of Reb Yisrael Peretz

She passed away 23 Tishri 5706

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

Leah [LAY-ah] is a Biblical name.

Yisrael is Israel

Peretz is a Biblical name.

The 23rd of Tishri began at sunset on September 29th, 1945, and ended at sunset on the 30th. The secular date on the stone is the 29th, which would indicate that she passed away between sunset and midnight of that date.
