ELIEZER son of Reb Yisrael Shimshon

the Levite. He passed away 19 Adar II 5725

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

----------------------------------------------------

Eliezer [eh-lee-EH-zer] is a Biblical name. The Yiddish pronunciation of this name is eh-lee-AY-zer, for which the nickname is LAY-zer, hence the secular name Lazar.

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

His father had a double name. Yisrael is Israel; Shimshon is Samson.

The deceased and his father were Levites, descended from Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. Levites had specific functions in the Temples, and still receive special recognition -- and have special obligations – today. Levite is a designation passed from father to son.

The death occurred in the month of “Adar II”. In a Jewish leap year, the standard 12th month, Adar, is replaced by two months: Adar I and Adar II.
