This is an image from Liverpool's Rice Lane Jewish Cemetery (est. 1896).
I need help translating the Hebrew. The English inscription is mostly hidden as the memorial is broken, but the "A. YAMPOLSKI" is legible.

7/9/2025 2:34 PM Here lies

the dear man Reb ARYEH son of Reb

Tzvi Gad, he passed away on the 3rd day of Elul

of the year 5659

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

------------------------------------------------

‘Reb’ is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Aryeh [AHR-yay] is Hebrew for lion.

Tzvi is Hebrew for deer. The Yiddish word for deer is Hirsh. Because of this, some men with Tzvi as part of their Hebrew name have a secular name that sounds similar to Hirsh, such as Harry, Harold, Herbert, etc.

Gad is the name of one of the twelve tribes of Israel.

The 3rd of Elul, 5659, began at sunset on August 8th, 1899, and ended at sunset on the 9th.
