My family name, Chernik, has appeared two slightly different ways in Russian documents. What is the last letter on the bottom rendition? How does it sound?

1/2/2024 11:33 AM Due to an outdated pre-revolutionary (before 1917) spelling rule: at the end of a word ending with a hard consonant, a hard sign was added after it.
these surnames are identical, but in the second version there is this solid sign Ъ(in Russian) -
Chernik = Черник=ЧерникЪ
