This photo was found recently, and I'm trying to figure out who this family is. On the reverse is the name and address (NYC) of my great-grandfather (Meyer Goldner) circa 1915. The family was based just north of Iasi, Romania, in the village of Savran. I have considerable information on the extended Goldner family, but less about my great-grandmother's family (the Fibish or Fybish family). I'm hoping to figure out which family this is within my extended based on the relative ages of the individuals. The photo is larger than 8.5 x 11 inches, and is mounted to a cardboard frame. I would appreciate any help to figure out...

1. What are the ages of the individuals?
2. When/where do you believe this photo was taken? I'm guessing it was from Romania and was sent to Meyer in New York around 1915, but it could be earlier.
3. Any clues about the family based on clothing, furniture, etc?

I'd appreciate any help you can provide!

Whoops! That should have read "Bivolari," not "Savran." The family was from Bivolari.

To help determine the date of the photograph, have you tried New York City city directories to find out which year(s) your great-grandfather lived at the address on the reverse? Also, can you read the writing in the lower right-hand corner of the photograph? If it is the photographer's name, you may be able to determine where the photograph was taken by using city directories or other sources.

Just guesses:

The girl on the right could be around 15.
She resembles .to the woman in the back.
The man in the back resembles to the woman on the left. And the two of them resemble with the sitting woman.

The grownups are hard to estimate. The two in the back could be around 30. The woman perhaps a bit older than the man. But I would think them to be the parents of the girl on the right. So they should be a bit older 32, 35?
The sitting couple look like to be his parents. The woman could be 55, the man perhaps 59. It is very hard to guess men with beards.
The woman on the left I would think to be the sister of the man in the back. She seems to have two or three years more than him around 34 years. The second child could be 4 or 5. (?)
The 3 younger women show more décolleté. I would date the photo around 1915 or even a bit later.
The tassels on the table could fit for Romania or south eastern Europe.
The dress of the sitting woman is a very good dress. The other dresses are plainer in style but of quality. They do not seem to be rich, but to live in quite some wealth.

On the point of whether the family was well-to-do, I have to disagree with Irin. As I have said repeatedly on this site and in my lectures, you cannot always tell the economic status of a family by the clothing they are wearing in their photographs. Clothing was sometimes borrowed from the photographer. Sometimes the best clothing was reserved for special occasions such as photographs. In fact, this family may not have been so wealthy. The man seated at the right is wearing a coat that is just a little too big for him. Not a sign of wealth. Family history and other documentation can prove or disprove the economic status of the family.
