Cemetery Description:

Original Jewish Burial Plot, Median of Oglethorpe Av near Bull St., Savannah, GA. USA, 17 burials total.

The Original Burial Plot is the first known Jewish burial plot and was allotted by the founder of the colony, Colonel James Edward Oglethorpe, in 1733 "upon the Common of the Town of Savannah." There is no record of the identity or the number of interments in this cemetery. However, research suggests the 17 individuals listed in this index are buried there. The cemetery was in use between 1733 to at least 1765. Information was transcribed from "Savannah's Old Jewish Community Cemeteries," by B.H. Levy (1983).
