I cannot read Hebrew and would appreciate a translation of what is written on the Tombstone.

5/8/2024 3:59 PM I’m afraid that some of the text is faded, but this is what I can read
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Here lies

an unblemished and honest man, _____ of good virtues

our teacher, the rabbi

REUVEN son of Reb Menachem Mendel

Goldschmid

from the land of Russia from the city of Volit____

He passed away 25 days into the month of Tevet

of the year 5652. May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

----------------------------------------------------------------
‘Reb’ is an honorific; the father of the deceased was not a rabbi. His own name, however, is preceded by an abbreviation that represents the words “our teacher, the rabbi”. This normally indicates that the person had rabbinical ordination, not necessarily that he was the rabbi of a synagogue or community. I need to point out that this abbreviation occasionally appears in error (or, sometimes, simply as words of praise to indicate that the person was scholarly), so I would suggest trying to get confirmation of his rabbinical status – if any – from a second source.

His Hebrew name is pronounced reh-OO-vayn.

His father had a common double name. Menachem is a Biblical name, and Mendel is a Yiddish nickname derived from Menachem.

The 25th of Tevet, 5652, began at sunset on January 24th, 1892, and ended at sunset on the 25th. (This differs slightly from the ‘1891’ written underneath the photo.)
