Here lies

our dear mother, Mrs.

MUSHEH LEAH daughter of Reb Meir Dov

She passed away the 2nd of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan 5699

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Her father's name was Meir [pronounced MAY-EER] Dov.

Dov means bear. Men with the name Dov as their Hebrew name sometimes (certainly not always) have secular names similar to bear, such as Bernard).

She passed away the “2nd day of Rosh Chodesh”. Rosh Chodesh, literally “head of the month”, also known as the “new moon”, can be a 1-day or 2-day event. If the month that just ended had 30 days, then it is a two-day event, with the first day being the last day of the month that is ending, and the second day being the first day of the month that is beginning. Thus, the “2nd day of Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan” was actually the first day of the month of Cheshvan.
