Here lies

the dear and important woman

A woman of valor, the crown of her home

She spread out her palm to the poor

And sent out her hands to the destitute

Mrs. SHAYNEH daughter of Reb Moshe

the Cohen

She passed away at a satisfactory old age

4 Adar II 5703

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

The three lines of praise are extracted from the poem "Woman of Valor" which was written by King Solomon.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Her father was a Cohen, member of the priestly tribe that traces back to Aaron, Moses' brother. This is a designation that is passed from father to son. Cohanim [plural of Cohen] served in the Temples and still have special recognition and obligations today.

She passed away in the month of "Adar II". In a Hebrew leap year, the standard 12th month, Adar, is replaced by two months, Adar I and Adar II.

The 4th of Adar II of the year 5703 began at sunset on March 10th, 1943, and ended at sunset on the 11th.
