REFAEL son of Yosef the Levite

He passed away 12 Elul

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

His father's name was Yosef, Hebrew for Joseph. He (and therefore the deceased, too) was a Levite, descended from Levi, one of the 12 sons of Jacob. This designation is passed from father to son. Levites played an important role in the Temples, and still receive recognition today.

The 12th of Elul of the year 5678 began at sunset on August 19th, 1918, and ended at sunset on the 20th.

(There is a very slight chance that the Hebrew year is 5675, rather than 5678, in which case the secular date would be August 21/22, 1915.
