My dear husband, our teacher, the rabbi

MOSHE son of Reb Yosef

He passed away the 1st of Rosh Chodesh Kislev

5696. May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

As always, 'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

The name of the deceased is preceded by an abbreviation that translates to "our teacher, the rabbi". This means that the person had rabbinical ordination; he was not necessarily the rabbi of a congregation or community. I do need to point out that this abbreviation was sometimes used without its true meaning being understood. I would suggest trying to confirm his rabbinical status from another source.

His date of death is given as "the first day of Rosh Chodesh". Rosh Chodesh, literally the "head of the month", also known as the "New Moon", can be a one-day or two-day event, depending upon whether the previous month had 29 or 30 days. In this case, it was a two-day event, meaning that the "first day" of Rosh Chodesh was actually the 30th day of the previous month, in this case the 30th day of Cheshvan.
