the important woman, Mrs.

RACHEL LEAH daughter of Reb

She passed away and buried on Friday, 14th of

Iyar of the year 5661

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; her father was not a rabbi. He was, however, a Cohen, member of the priestly tribe that traces back, son to father, to Aaron, Moses' brother.

There is a typo in the name of the month, Iyar,

Here, too, there is a discrepancy between the Hebrew and secular dates.

The 14th of Iyar, 5661, which was a Friday, began at sunset on May 2nd, 1901, and ended at sunset on the 3rd.

The secular date on the stone, April 24th, 1901, was a Wednesday, and corresponds to the 4th or 5th of Iyar, depending upon whether she died before or after sunset.

I think there may have been an attempt to erase the erroneous character in the date -- I actually read it as dash, and the date as ד - that is 4th of Iyar.
