Reb/Rav ASHER ZELIG son of Reb

Yechiel Michel, may he rest in peace [this refers to the father]

He passed away the 29th of the month of

Menachem Av, 5671

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; his father was not a rabbi.

His own name is preceded by an abbreviation that translates to "our teacher, the rabbi". This normally indicates that the person had received rabbinic ordination, not necessarily that he was the rabbi of a community or synagogue. It must point out that this abbreviation was sometimes used in error. If it is an error, then the letter "Resh" that immediately precedes his name would represent the word 'Reb', an honorary title. If, however, he was indeed a rabbi, then this "Resh" represents the word 'Rav', rabbi.

The month of Menachem Av is also known by the shorter name, Av.

Just adding a little clarification. As noted earlier the father's name was "Yechiel Michel." This is a pairing of a Hebrew name (Yechiel) with a sort of nickname or sometimes Yiddish name, in this case, "Michel." This is NOT Michael. Some people have misunderstood this and perhaps named a descendant as Michael.
