our dear mother,

Mrs. ESTHER daughter of Reb Nachum the Cohen

See passed away 14 Menachem Av 568

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Her father was a Cohen, member of the priestly tribe that traces back, son to father, to Aaron, Moses' brother.

The Hebrew month "Menachem Av" also goes by the shorter name of "Av".
