This stone is unusual, in that part of the name of the deceased is abbreviated. Only the first two consonants of the first part of his name appear (M-N). I have read this as Menachem, because the double name "Menachem Mendel" is very common, Mendel being a Yiddish nickname for the Hebrew name Menachem.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

I see that you have the last name as Chernin. There is no Hebrew letter that represents the sound 'ch' as in chair. There is a convention that the letter Tzadi (usually pronounced TZ) is used instead, with an apostrophe added to show that this should be read as CH and not TZ. The apostrophe does not appear on the stone.

In addition, the Hebrew letters for the R sound and the D sound are similar in shape, but not identical. The engraver accidentally put a Daled rather than a Resh. This is why I wrote "TZEDNIN [sic]" and not Chernin.

The 4th of Av of the year 5699 began at sunset on July 19th, 1939, and ended at sunset on the 20th.
